The Sunshine Outfit is an outfit for Mario introduced in Super Mario Sunshine. It is a sky-blue shirt with small Shine Sprite images printed on it, and is often accompanied by the a pair of sunglasses called the Sunshine Shades. In its appearances, the Sunshine Outfit served mainly just an aesthetic purpose.
Super Mario Sunshine
In Super Mario Sunshine, the sunglasses and shirt are optional clothing items that Mario can receive from the sunglasses vendor. The criteria for obtaining each item differs, so it is possible for Mario to wear the sunglasses without the shirt. Before he can wear the sunglasses, Mario needs to have obtained at least 30 Shine Sprites, and before receiving the shirt, he must first have defeated Bowser at Corona Mountain. Once the criteria for both the sunglasses and shirt have been met, Mario can only receive them together. The only function that the sunglasses have is slightly darkening the screen, thereby reducing the bright effects of the sunlight, whereas the shirt serves only an aesthetic purpose. If Mario is wearing the Sunshine Outfit and talks again to the sunglasses vendor, he takes the Sunshine Outfit back from Mario.
In Pianta Village's episodes set during the nighttime, the sunglasses vendor does not give Mario sunglasses.
Super Mario Odyssey
Through an update released in February 2018 in Super Mario Odyssey, Mario can receive the Sunshine Outfit, which only serves a cosmetic purpose. The sprites of Mario wearing the Sunshine Outfit during the 8-bit sections depicts the shirt as darker than in other appearances.

In Super Mario Galaxy, there is an unused model of Mario wearing only the Sunshine Outfit without the Sunshine Shades.
